Curbside Leaf Collection

This fall, the City of Auburn will provide FREE CURBSIDE LEAF COLLECTION for residents to help prevent flooding, to protect water quality, and to help keep our neighborhood streets safe for people driving, riding, and walking.

The City of Auburn is committed to beautification, maintaining city infrastructure, protecting property from flooding and storm damage, and improving water quality in our rivers and streams.

Please place bagged leaves curbside:
OCTOBER 29 + 30
NOVEMBER 5 + 6
NOVEMBER 12 + 13

Our partners at Casella have been contracted to pick up BAGGED LEAVES for Auburn residents this fall.

  • Please place your bagged leaves curbside ONLY on the dates listed above.
  • Do not place your bags near your trash/recycling carts while curbside (allow 3' to 5' of space).
  • Gather ONLY leaves, twigs and small yard debris in bags.
  • DO NOT place brush, branches, limbs, or other yard waste curbside - it will not be collected.
  • Place bags at the curbside (not in the street), by 7AM on any of the dates listed above.
  • Please BE PATIENT - crews will get to your bagged leaves as soon as they can. Understand that collection is only taking place on two days per week, so your bags may be curbside for a while.

Other ways to dispose of leaves & yard waste

  • Mulch or compost to help your garden grow! Add leaves to your compost pile or "leave the leaves" when you mow. Mulched leaves & grass clippings help fertilize your lawn.
  • Take leaves, brush and other natural wood products to Oldcastle (just over the Auburn border at 481 Springwater Road in Poland - no charge for residents).
  • Take bagged leaves and small yard waste to Maine Waste to Energy (Goldthwaite Road) and drop in household waste bin (no charge for residents).

Never blow leaves or grass into roadways!

Our program promotes public safety by keeping leaves out of bike lanes, streets, and sidewalks. Leaves and grass on roadways can be very dangerous and may cause flooding.

  • Vehicles may swerve out of their lane to avoid piles of leaves.
  • Dangerous items may be covered up inside piles (large rocks, bicycles, etc.)
  • Piles can be an attractive nuisance for children to play in.
  • Forces bicycle commuters into the vehicle travel lane.
  • Leaves and debris can clog storm drains.

Environmental Benefits of leaf collection

  • Prevents Water Pollution: Decomposing leaves wash into storm drains, releasing excess nitrogen and phosphorus that cause harmful algae blooms in local lakes and rivers.
  • Protects Local Drainage: Clearing leaves from curbs, roadways and storm drains prevents street flooding and protects aquatic habitats from sudden surges of debris-heavy runoff.
