Littlefield Dam Removal

Work will begin in the summer of 2026 to remove the Littlefield Dam thanks to $3.5 million grant the City of Auburn received from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The grant is a cooperative agreement with NOAA's Fisheries Habitat Conservation Program.

The Littlefield Dam sits on the Little Androscoggin River and was built in the early 1900s as a hydroelectric generating station. Floodwaters broke through the dam in March 1936, leaving it permanently out of service. The dam blocks upstream passage of fish, including Atlantic salmon, so its removal is an important part of the larger restoration effort within the Little Androscoggin watershed.
