City of Auburn – 2026 Personal Property Canvas and Filing Notice

Attention Business Owners: The filing deadline for your business asset list (personal property filing) is April 15, 2026.

The City of Auburn Assessing Division is conducting its annual business canvas to update business information. You may see an Assessing staff member at your location this month. We are available to answer questions about filing requirements and tax relief programs.

Forms: Paper copies will be mailed in early March and are available online: Personal Property Forms

Tax Relief Programs: Businesses that file a personal property return may qualify for one of two State of Maine programs:

  1. Business Equipment Tax Exemption (BETE): 100% exemption for eligible assets placed in service after April 1, 2007. Retail sales businesses are not eligible.
  2. Business Equipment Tax Reimbursement (BETR): Refund program for qualifying businesses/assets.

Under Maine Law (§706-A), business owners must report all business assets as of April 1 each tax year when requested by the Assessor.
