Community Health Promotion

Part of Auburn’s Business & Community Development Department

Jennifer Edwards – Public Health Manager

Health and wellness are important to all of us, and we recognize that there are many variables that directly impact the health of our citizens, neighborhoods, businesses, and community here in Auburn. Individual health and wellness is not simply the result of everyday individual choices such as what to eat, how much to exercise, and taking the advice of a trusted health care professional.

Health and wellness are greatly impacted by social determinants of health (SDOH) as well. Factors such as the quality of our schools and access to education, access to trainings for good paying jobs that can lift families out of poverty, the safety of the places where we work, learn, and recreate, our access to safe and affordable housing, the safety of our neighborhoods and community, our access to timely physical and mental health care and quality nutritious food, our exposure (or lack of exposure) to trauma and neglect during early development, the quality of the relationships and social connections in our lives, access to recovery supports and re-entry supports, the quality of the water we drink and air we breathe, access to nature and green spaces to play and recreate, and our sense of belonging and purpose ALL impact our individual physical, emotional, and mental health as well as the overall quality of life and health for our community here in Auburn.

Our vision is to create and promote a healthy Auburn.

HEALTH EQUITY IN OUR COMMUNITY

Health equity means that everyone has a fair opportunity to live a long, productive and healthy life. Conditions in the places where people live, learn, work and play affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes. Healthy Androscoggin works to address these health inequities through various projects and programs. The goal of Healthy Androscoggin’s health equity programming is to help local healthcare and wellness providers improve their cultural competency and increase access to care for diverse populations.
